Sandy beaches. Gentle breezes. Inviting pools. And plenty of soothing sunshine. Best of all, you’ll find it all just a short flight away. The only thing you might lose track of is the hectic pace back home. You're invited to take a trip to paradise.

Two-thirds national park, the tiny island of St. John is home to virgin forests, hiking trails, an underwater snorkeling trail and the magnificent Westin St. John Resort and Villas.

Overlooking Great Cruz Bay, the resort features 96 vacation villas, 13 townhouses and 7 suites. Turquoise bays and white sand beaches are a delightful backdrop for snorkeling, kayaking, tennis and swimming in a freshwater pool with its own waterfall. Enjoy aqua aerobics or rent a jeep at the resort to explore the island. Don't forget to take along a picnic from the Mango Deli - the perfect complement to any adventure. As the sun sets, enjoy Caribbean specialties in open-air splendor, or relax with reggae and calypso music in the lounges.

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Behaviorists

Portland, OR

&

Karin Beale D.V.M.

Diplomate American College of Veterinary Dermatology

Dermatology and Allergy
Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists
Houston, Texas

Both speakers are going to discuss the most common questions that they receive on a daily basis from both referring veterinarians and clients. This course will present a practical approach to the diagnosis and management of these common problems using a combination of didactic and case-based teaching. Dr. Jacqui Neilson is one of the leading experts in the field of small animal behavior and is the founder of The Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland. She has published extensively in all the major journals & texts and lectures frequently for IVS and the other major veterinary conferences. Dr. Karin Beale founded Gulf Coast Dermatology & Allergy and is actively involved with the day to day management of a large itchy case load. Karin lectures around the world and we are very fortunate to have her agree to lecture for IVS.

Both speakers have promised me that the seminars have been structured to maximize the material that you will take with you to your practice.

Some of the topics to be discussed:

  • Feline behavior problems

  • Feline inappropriate urination-how to manage this common problem; Elimination

out of the litterbox is the most common behavioral problem of cats and a common reason for banishment, relinquishment and euthanasia. However, with a a proper diagnosis and targeted treatment plan you can control/resolve most of this frustrating problem.

  •   Behavior modification drugs: in the past few years new research has elucidated uses of serotonin enhancing medications for common cat behavioral problems.  Learn the indications and contraindications for these drugs so that your patients can receive the best possible care.

  • Aggressive feline behavior: Feline aggression is often a component of elimination problems but can also cause unrest in a multi-cat household.  Learn about feline social structure and how to reduce tension between cats.

  • Introducing new cats to a house: Most cat owners just can't stop with one....however adding cats to the household can also add the headaches of intercat aggression and elimination problems.  Help educate your clients about the best ways to prevent problems as their feline family grows.

  • Managing the vocal cat

  • Kitten Kindy - Developed by Dr. Seskel in Australia this preventative behavioral program is the feline equivalent of Puppy Preschool.  Details of this program will be presented so that you can offer a Kitten Kindy in your practice, thereby bonding clients to your practice and preventing problem behaviors.

  • Unruly and Annoying Behaviors:  Plant eating, scratching, jumping on counters, wakening owners at night are all complaints of cat owners.  When clients complain about these issues you will know the best possible options for resolution.
  • Feline fear, phobias and compulsive behaviors:  we will explore common feline fears, phobias and compulsive behaviors with appropriate treatment options.

  •  How do I improve my dermatology diagnostic skills?

  • How do I treat chronic otitis?

  • How do I manage the patient with recurrent skin infections?

  • When and how do I use steroids to manage patients with dermatologic conditions

  • How do I decide which topical shampoo therapy to select?

  •        How do you differentiate the various nasal dermatoses?

  •        How do you manage the patient with pruritic dermatitis?

  •       What are the current thoughts on diagnosis and treatment of ringworm?

  •       What new topical therapies are available for the management of skin disease?
